Movement, music and connection in Palmerston North

All news, articles & events

Recently our Community Development Lead, Georgie, had the pleasure of joining the Palmerston North Support Group for their weekly movement class – and quickly discovered that she had some catching up to do!

"From the moment I arrived, the group was so welcoming. There was plenty of laughter, conversation and encouragement, and it was clear that this weekly class is about much more than movement. It is also an opportunity to connect with others, enjoy some time together and be part of a supportive friendly group.

One thing also became very clear early on – I was possibly the least coordinated person in the room! Many of the group members have been attending for some time, and their coordination and knowledge of the movements certainly showed.

The class is led by Tania Kopytko, an experienced dance instructor who has danced throughout her life. Her background really shines through in how she brings music, movement and fun together.

The exercises are set to music, with the Bee Gees being a particular highlight during my visit, and can be adapted depending on each person’s ability.

The class can be completed while seated. While chair-based exercise might sound easy, I quickly discovered just how much movement can be achieved without ever leaving a chair! Arms, legs and the whole body were kept moving throughout the session.

For those who are able and feel comfortable doing so, there is also the opportunity to stand and complete some of the movements. The adaptability is one of the lovely things about the class. You can participate at a level that works for you, without feeling that you need to keep up with anyone else.

And, just as importantly, there is afternoon tea!

The social connection that comes alongside the movement is a big part of what makes groups like this so special. It provides an opportunity to meet other people in the community, have a chat and enjoy being active together.

There is room for you!

The Palmerston North group would love to welcome some new faces.

Whether you are living with arthritis, experiencing limited mobility, wanting to gently reintroduce movement into your week, or simply looking for an enjoyable and supportive way to keep active, this could be a great place to start.

Prefer the water? There’s a group for that too!

The Palmerston North group also runs 30-minute water-based exercise sessions for people looking for another gentle way to keep moving.

Sessions are held in the hydrotherapy pool at Palmerston North Hospital on Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings, and there are currently spaces available for new  members.

A medical clearance is required before taking part in the hydrotherapy sessions, but once this has been completed, you are very welcome to join the group.

You don’t have to choose between the two as you are welcome to take part in both the movement class and the water-based exercise group.

If you live in Palmerston North or the surrounding area and have been thinking about finding a local group, this is a wonderfully welcoming one to try.
