At Keith Park Village in Auckland, a special group of residents has discovered a simple yet powerful way to bring comfort to people living with arthritis – through the gentle rhythm of knitting needles!
“Our village first opened in 2021, and while it’s still being completed, our knitting group really came to life in late 2022,” says Janice from the Keith Park Village craft group. “As more apartments opened and new residents arrived, our group grew too. Many of us love knitting, and it’s been a wonderful way to connect with each other and give back to those in need.”
The group receives donations of wool from generous sources, and many members also buy their own supplies. With this, they create a huge variety of items – children’s clothing, beanies, baby blankets, twiddle muffs for people with dementia, and even playful projects like yarn-bombing a bike! Their knitting has supported charities far and wide, and recently, they turned their attention to Arthritis NZ through Project Knit Well.

The knitted goodies will be sent to people who reach out to Arthritis Assist for support – often at a time when they are in pain or feeling alone. For those callers, receiving a package with handmade kindness is a heartfelt reminder that people care.
“We all really enjoyed knitting for Arthritis NZ,” says Janice. “Some of us even have arthritis in our hands, so we understand what it’s like. Knitting helps keep our fingers moving, and we also use the exercises Arthritis NZ sent us. It’s great to be able to give back in this way.”
Janice encourages other groups around the country to give it a go too. “It’s such a great way to socialise, share skills, and support people who might need a boost. You don’t have to be an expert – even simple blankets can make a big difference. And you never know, if someone pops in just for a chat, they often end up picking up the needles!”
From their vibrant poppies for ANZAC Day displays to cosy blankets for children, the Keith Park Village craft group shows that every stitch carries warmth, community, and care. Their latest project for Arthritis Assist is more than just knitting – it’s a reminder that living well with arthritis is not something people need to do alone.
We like to help those in need, and it keeps us connected. Plus, it’s fun – and that’s important too!
