Arthritis NZ Mateponapona Aotearoa is delighted to announce the appointment of Nicola Keen-Biggelaar as its new Chief Executive, commencing on 21 September.

Nicola joins Arthritis New Zealand following seven years as Chief Executive of Drowning Prevention Auckland, where she has led the organisation through a significant period of strategic development, organisational growth and increased impact.

She brings extensive leadership experience from across the not-for-profit sector, including organisational strategy, fundraising, research and advocacy, stakeholder engagement, and the development of strong, purpose-led teams.

Arthritis New Zealand Board Chair Rebecca Roberts says Nicola was selected following a comprehensive recruitment process.

“Nicola brings the strategic leadership, energy and commitment needed to lead Arthritis NZ into its next chapter. She has a strong record of building organisational capability, strengthening partnerships and translating purpose into meaningful impact.

“The Board was also impressed by Nicola’s genuine connection to our cause and her determination to improve outcomes for people living with arthritis. We are delighted to welcome her to Arthritis NZ.”

Nicola says she is honoured to have the opportunity to lead the organisation.

“Arthritis affects hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders, yet its impact on people’s lives is not always well understood. It is a privilege to be joining an organisation committed to helping people live well and experience greater freedom despite arthritis.

“This cause is personally meaningful to me because of my own family’s experience of rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. I am looking forward to listening and learning from people with lived experience, working alongside the Arthritis NZ team, and strengthening the partnerships and sustainable funding needed to grow the organisation’s impact across Aotearoa.”

Nicola will take up the role following the completion of her responsibilities at Drowning Prevention Auckland at the end of August.

The Board and team look forward to welcoming Nicola and introducing her to the Arthritis NZ community over the coming months. The Board also acknowledges and appreciates outgoing Chief Executive Philip Kearney's continued leadership and commitment during this transition period. His support in ensuring a smooth handover reflects his ongoing dedication to Arthritis New Zealand Mateponapona Aotearoa and the people it serves.
