“I’m Not Alone” – The Power of Community Conversations About Osteoarthritis

Recently, Arthritis NZ Health Coach Becs spent time with residents at a retirement village in Christchurch, exploring pain and osteoarthritis, and sharing practical ways to help “turn down the volume” of pain. The session focused on building understanding, confidence, and everyday strategies to support people to live well with osteoarthritis.

Living with arthritis can affect much more than joints. Pain, stiffness, fatigue, and changes in mobility can affect confidence, independence, and everyday life. Community presentations like these give people a chance to ask questions, learn practical ways to manage arthritis, and connect with others who understand.

As an icebreaker but also with a deeper meaning behind it, Becs got the group up trying a few simple exercises, and everyone participated with enthusiasm and smiles. There was plenty of humour along the way, and a chance to see that movement can be adapted to suit different bodies and abilities.

The session covered understanding osteoarthritis, staying active, pacing, pain management, and ways to support wellbeing. Just as importantly, people shared stories, swapped ideas, and realised they were not alone in what they were experiencing.

As Becs reflected after the session, knowledge is empowering, but feeling seen, heard, and understood can be just as powerful. Community presentations help normalise conversations about arthritis, give people confidence to ask questions, and create spaces where learning happens together.

If you are feeling stuck with arthritis pain, support is available. If you live in a retirement village or retirement home, have a look at the activities on offer — you may be surprised by what is available. In the wider community, organisations such as Age Concern, community centres, and local exercise groups often offer affordable, safe, and community-focused activities. Research shows that exercise can help manage arthritis pain, stiffness, strength, mobility, and overall wellbeing.

Becs is part of our Arthritis Assist team, and through Arthritis Assist we can help you find services, activities, and support options in your local area.
