People with arthritis in the Waikato DHB area now have access to personalised telephone support from Arthritis New Zealand.

The service is designed to help people manage their pain and other symptoms, improve their quality of life and slow the progression of the disease.

The advantage of the phone service is that it can be accessed from people’s homes, without the need to travel, says Arthritis New Zealand spokesperson Cathie Morton. Resources can be received by post or email and goals can be made that fit in with participants’ lifestyle.

“It’s great, especially for people who are living in more isolated or rural areas. They don’t have to drive to a medical centre to get the advice and support they need.  They don’t even need a referral. All they have to do is pick up the phone, and ask to speak with an arthritis educator,” she said.

Those who sign on have access to an arthritis educator for three months. The educator will assess individuals’ pain and mobility levels, help them set personal goals, provide information about exercise and nutrition, and monitor their progress through follow up phone calls.

The service is free to people with any form of arthritis, including gout, and is delivered under contract to the Waikato District Health Board.
