The ASB Summer Starter is a 10km fun run or walk from New Brighton Pier to Redcliff’s Park in Christchurch. Taking place on Sunday, 26th November Cantabrians and visitors to the region will be able to walk, run, skip, or roll the 10km course and fundraise for your cause. There is also a shorter 4km course.
First step is to choose your fundraising target
After you have decided what your fundraising challenge will be, set the amount you want to raise for Arthritis New Zealand and don’t be afraid to aim high, Sir Edmund Hilary summed it up nicely when he said: “You don’t have to be a fantastic hero to do certain things – to compete. You can be just an ordinary chap, sufficiently motivated to reach challenging goals.”
Then set up your fundraising page
It’s easy we promise all you need to do is click HERE and follow the instructions. Once it’s set up make sure you send the page’s URL to all of your friends and family so they can sponsor you.
If you would like some tips to help maximise your online fundraising, here are a few simple ones to start with:
- Personalise your fundraising webpage with a photo or YouTube video and explain why you are passionate about raising funds for your charity.
- Set an achievable target that isn’t too low – you may be surprised by people’s generosity!
- Email your family and closest friends first, then other potential supporters.
- Ask to be included on your company website or newsletter.
- Change your work or home email signature to include a link to your fundraising page.
- Post or Tweet about your fundraising efforts on Facebook or Twitter, including the URL of your page.
Arthritis. Could you handle it?
In 2011, over 530,000 New Zealanders aged 15 or over are living with at least one type of arthritis. That means most families have a member with arthritis!
Over a 1000 children and young people under the age of 18, are affected
Over 25,000 New Zealanders will not work in 2010 due to arthritis
It is a painful and unpredictable disease
Arthritis is the single greatest cause of disability in this country
There is no cure
Why fundraise for us?
It costs Arthritis New Zealand over $5 million a year to provide essential services – the government funds approximately 12%. The balance is met through fundraising activities such as the national Annual Appeal week. By getting sponsored for your challenge, the money you raise will go to help support the thousands of New Zealanders who suffer from arthritis by funding our support services like our Arthritis Educators.
Remember safety first though! Make sure you:
Prepare and train properly for your activity
Warm up and cool down properly before and after an event.
Seek medical advice if you have any doubts about your ability to take part in any activity.
Take particular care if you are undertaking intensive physical activity of a type, or at a level, which is new to you.
If you’re planning on taking part in an ‘extreme’ sporting activity, consider whether you need professional instructors or guides to help you.
So enough of the chat, let’s get moving and together we enable a better quality of life for that friend/or family member that sufferers from this painful and debilitating condition. We thank you so much for your support; we couldn’t do what we do without you!
