Arthritis NZ was invited by Ngā Hapū o Ōtaki, a local NGO based in Ōtaki, to facilitate a session on gout arthritis. Zechariah Reuelu, Community Development Lead – Pacific Peoples, engaged with the group, discussing the genetic factors contributing to higher uric acid levels among Māori and Pasifika communities.

Zechariah facilitated a storytelling-based presentation, illustrating how uric acid forms in the body and why some people naturally retain more than others. This session provided a shared space for open dialogue, reinforcing that gout is not a personal failing but a health condition influenced by various factors. The conversation focused on debunking myths about why we get gout, shared experiences, practical management strategies, and the importance of community support in navigating arthritis-related challenges.

Arthritis NZ values these opportunities to connect with and support local communities on their health journeys. The visit to the Ōtaki Kaumātua group was a meaningful exchange of knowledge and experiences, reinforcing our commitment to helping people with gout arthritis manage it effectively with resources, information, and education.
