Familes Camp was once again a huge success. The weekend was filled with laughter, learning, and lasting friendships. Families came together, sharing experiences, support, and fun.
This year, we welcomed 27 families, with a noticeable increase in young boys attending.
The weekend was packed with engaging activities and valuable learning opportunities. The Lower Hutt Nurse Specialty Team for Paediatric Rheumatology led insightful education sessions while our incredible youth leaders hosted interactive Q&A panels.
Parents found comfort in connecting with others who shared their experiences, while children thrived in a space designed for fun and friendship. One caregiver reflected, “It was empowering and a huge confidence booster for my child. He said he wants to come to Families Camp every year and has made a friend his age nearby us.”
We are immensely grateful to our generous funders and donors who made this camp free for families. Their support ensures that young people and their families receive support during a difficult time.
A glimpse into Families Camp, from a child’s perspective
by Georgie-Anne Cox
The plane rumbled as it lifted into the sky! Isabella pressed her face against the window, watching the clouds blur past. She had been counting down the days to this moment, the Families Camp for children with arthritis. This weekend wasn’t just about getting away with her beloved dad; it was about meeting kids like her, who understood what it was like to live with sore joints and endless doctor’s visits.
As soon as they arrived, Isabella felt a rush of excitement. Laughter and chatter filled the air as families adventured around Butterfly Creek before loading into the bus to camp! The bus was buzzing with energy, with children chatting, parents greeting each other like old friends, and camp leaders organising activities and introducing themselves.
The first night was about getting to know each other; there were over 27 families from all over NZ. Sitting around a big room, Isabella listened as others shared their stories and diagnosis. Some had been diagnosed as toddlers, others more recently. “It was like hearing my own story being told,” Isabella thought, realising she wasn’t alone.
Saturday was packed with activities. There were games designed to be fun and confidence-boosting rock-climbing sessions with harnesses that took the pressure off their bodies. “I never thought I could climb a rock wall, but here, they make sure everyone can try!” Isabella said, beaming.
In between activities, the Lower Hutt Nurse Specialty Team for Paediatric Rheumatology led educational workshops for parents. One parent shared, “This camp isn’t just for the kids. It’s for us too—to learn, connect, and know we’re not alone in this journey.”
Tristan, Isabella’s father, was especially moved by the experience. “Words cannot even begin to describe the gratitude and appreciation we as a family have for you and the team. Camp 2025 – WOW. Isabella had the best time, and the educational sessions blew me away. This really has made navigating this journey of JIA that much easier.”
As the weekend ended, Isabella felt she had gained friends, confidence, and a sense of belonging she didn’t know she needed. “I wish camp lasted forever,” she whispered as she hugged her new friends goodbye.
For many families, this camp was more than just an Arthritis Camp, it was a reminder that arthritis didn’t define their children. Tristan summed it up best: “I would recommend camp to any parent navigating through this trying time. What you do for the kids and parents and all the planning that goes into this shines through at these camps. I cannot even begin to express my gratitude and appreciation.”
Thank you to everyone who joined us for an unforgettable weekend.
We can’t wait to do it all again next year.
