This month Arthritis NZ spoke at a three-month hui with Canterbury health coaches from Emerge Aotearoa. It was a great opportunity to connect and share resources that can make a real difference for people living with arthritis.

Health coaches are on the front lines of Primary Health Organisations (PHOs), providing free support that complements what GPs offer. While they don’t diagnose conditions or prescribe medication, they’re there to listen and help guide people through everyday life choices that can improve their health and well-being. With GP appointments often feeling rushed, health coaches are crucial in offering the time and support that many people need.

At Arthritis NZ, we’re all about sharing our resources and tools with health professionals so they can better support their clients with arthritis. As a nonprofit, we’re focused on ensuring everyone affected by arthritis, including those who care for people with arthritis, have access to the help they need, and working with health coaches is a big part of that.

This collaboration with Canterbury health coaches is one way we’re working to extend our support to more people across Aotearoa.

“Collaboration and resource-sharing with agencies like Arthritis NZ is essential for creating a cohesive and effective approach to a patient’s  health and well-being. By working together, we can leverage each other’s expertise, share valuable insights, and provide more comprehensive support to individuals on their health journey.  This collaborative approach  not only enhances the quality of care but also empowers individuals to make lasting, positive changes in their lives.  The presence of health improvement practitioners and health coaches in GP practices at no cost to patients streamlines collaboration, ensuring more seamless and integrated care.” – Deb Bradshaw, Clinical Lead at Te Tumu Waiora.

What does a health coach do?

Health Coach

A health coach is qualified to help you get the skills, resources, and tools to take an active role in your health care. They specialise in helping you form healthy habits and make sustainable lifestyle changes by integrating the latest science and practice techniques. A health coach’s role involves actively listening, motivating, inspiring, educating, and empathising with you as you work towards managing your health. Importantly, a health coach does not diagnose, prescribe, or treat medical conditions but instead focuses on your overall well-being. Read more about other allied health professionals.
