"These machines will be used to help provide education on gout management and measuring uric acid levels, which is a major risk factor for gout", says Sandra Kirby, Chief Executive for Arthritis New Zealand.

"Gout is under-diagnosed in New Zealand, but by having these machines at our seminars, hui and health expos, we are able to reach more people, especially in the Maori and Pacific Island communities, who otherwise would not know they are at risk.

"The good news is that gout can be managed by taking medications and implementing healthy changes to a person's diet and lifestyle," says Ms Kirby.

Gout is one of the most common types of arthritis, and has a high prevalence in the Maori and Pacific Island population. It is caused by a build-up of crystals of uric acid in the joints, causing severe pain and disability.

A presentation of the machines will take place at 11am, on the 20th January, at 9 Springs Road, East Tamaki, Auckland.
