Cox 2 Inhibitors Making Headlines Print

Recently there has been coverage in the media on a Melbourne grandfather winning the world’s first class action for people injured by the arthritis drug Vioxx, with a historic win over one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies.

For those New Zealanders with arthritis who have used Cox 2 inhibitors, Arthritis New Zealand would like to share the following key points:

  • Cox 2 inhibitors such as Vioxx and Celebrex, have been used as effective painkillers when other Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) were not effective. Cox 2 inhibitors are not only used for arthritis.
  • Vioxx was withdrawn from Pharmaceutical Schedule B in 2005 following concerns from tests that showed the risks of suffering from heart disease and strokes after using this medication was higher than first thought.
  • Many of our members protested at the withdrawal of Cox 2 inhibitors like Vioxx because they were deemed effective, and allowed people with Osteoarthritis in particular to sleep and perform their daily activities better than the alternatives. However, the risks associated with taking the medication were considered far too high.
If you wish to know more about Cox 2 inhibitors, please check with your GP about the side effects/risks involved in taking such medication.
