Arthritis New Zealand Honours a Role Model Print

Arthritis New Zealand were saddened to see that Michelle Belesarius, better known as Shelley, passed away last week.

Shelley worked closely with Arthritis New Zealand in the 1990’s to raise the awareness of Rheumatoid Arthritis and the crippling effect this can have. “Shelley showed many that arthritis can strike anyone at any age at any time, and not just the elderly. “ says Sandra Kirby CEO, Arthritis New Zealand

“Shelley’s bravery in challenging thinking to have a normal life was simply amazing and mirrors so many others we work with. “

It is estimated there are around 1000 children in New Zealand living with arthritis. “Since Shelley’s childhood there are many international achievements being made to diagnose and treat Juvenile Arthritis, much earlier, before joint damage is beyond repair. We need to ensure those are available consistently in New Zealand.” says Ms Kirby

Arthritis New Zealand provides services throughout New Zealand supporting those with all forms of arthritis, lobbying to ensure equity of access for medications, promoting research and awareness of the condition.
